A handmade bed isn't the only thing that will help your little one get to sleep...

I can’t quite believe it’s October already. Driving into work this morning I noticed the trees beginning to turn. Against a clear cobalt sky it was a sight to behold! Listen to me getting all poetic. Anyway I took a photograph of the glorious horse chestnut outside Heskin Hall, just next to our showroom, so you could share in its delight!

So back to the business of children’s furniture, or children’s sleep habits to be more precise...I read an article this week about super sleep nanny, Lucy Shrimpton, who professes to have some prize ideas on how to get your children to have a decent few hours in the land of nod.

Here are a few of her suggestions.

Spritz the room with ‘good dreams spray’.

Sounds like a plan doesn’t it? Using an empty spray bottle with a little water you can banish those pesky monsters from under the bed. Just make sure you pick up the right bottle before you go squirting them in the eye with cillit bang…

The sandwich tuck in.

This is for the children who constantly get out of bed or find it hard to lie still and calm. Lucy says that focussing on the ‘tucking-in’ process can help to settle them for the night.

By telling them you are making a pretend sandwich and using gentle chopping and sprinkling actions up and down the body, you can soothe a child into staying in bed.

Hmm, this an interesting one. My friend tried this on her little girl. Never again. After she tucked her in so tightly that she was effectively mummified by her bedspread, then told her she was the filling in some giant sandwich...well, you can imagine the result.

Sleepy vibe.

I like this one. Apparently, by yawning and reading in a slow soothing voice it is almost like hypnotising your child, according to Lucy.

Hands up who can do this one - without even trying!

Instill sleep manners

Just as we reward our children for their manners during the day, Lucy suggests we should do the same at night time too.

She says, “Laying in bed quietly at bedtime or not waking mummy or daddy in the night can be taught as good manners - just as saying ‘please’ or ‘thank you’ during the day.”

One thing at a time Lucy...

Don’t let your child get too tired

Lucy says, “When we miss our optimal sleep window our brains release the hormone cortisol to wake us up and we get what is known as a second wind.”

So in other words, you have a free pass to send your children up to bed even if they’re displaying boundless energy!

And if none of the above prove successful, you could always treat your child to a gorgeous, timeless, handmade to order children’s bed that will be their sleep sanctuary throughout childhood and beyond.

We are offering free delivery on all orders this month should you decide to indulge...
