Children's blackout blinds at the ready - prepare for your Sunday lie in!

The clocks go forward this weekend, or is it back? We google it, we ask around and we triple check by watching the news. In fact there is an easy way to remember - simply ‘spring’ forward and ‘fall’ back. I know, another pesky Americanism, but who cares as long as we don’t turn up to work an hour early!

The official time we go back to Greenwich Mean Time is 2am on Sunday, October 30th, so get those reminders stuck on the fridge and get ready for your lie in!

Although we’ve been doing this for years - some more years than others - it still never fails to confuse us. We spend Sunday wondering if the clock on our phone or ipad has automatically updated - or must we do it ourselves? We don’t even bother with the cooker/microwave/car dashboard. We just make a note to self that for the next six months those displays will be an hour out and get on with it. Where did those instruction manuals disappear to anyway?

And if you think you’ve got it tough, spare a thought for the Queen’s staff who have a mind boggling 959 timepieces to alter. So there are downsides to living in a palace then...

As well as our many clocks, we have another, more pressing issue to deal with - our children. Now we might be looking forward to an extra hour in bed but you can bet your bottom dollar that the little ones won’t give a monkey’s. So as the mornings are going to be lighter initially, make sure those blackout blinds are fully functioning and a perfect fit! Here are some other tips to deal with the time change:

  • Adjust bedtime by 10/15 minutes each day until you reach the desired time for sleep.

  • Be patient - your child will settle into their new routine eventually (hopefully before the end of March…)

  • Keep bedtime routines the same.

  • Move mealtimes, naps and bedtimes together.

  • If your child does get up too early, suggest staying in bed for a little longer with an activity to occupy them.

  • Try not to let those Halloween buckets get too full of sweets on Monday - such treats will make your job a whole lot trickier!

Finally, you can also make sure that your children’s bedrooms are a lovely place to be!

Handmade beds and gorgeous children’s bedding often do the trick….
