Beating the heat in your child's bedroom

The recent heatwave has left many of us flustered, sleepless and ever so slightly out of our minds (or is that just me?). We’ve rattled through box after box of ice lollies, had water fights galore and been drinking Pimms from the comfort of the paddling pool (definitely just me!), but we’re still baking…

Such heat is lovely in very small doses but when bedtime comes around it’s not so good. The children are restless, uncomfortable and find it hard to get to sleep. So what can you do to ease them into a lasting slumber?

How to keep your child’s bedroom cool

  • Keep windows and curtains in your child’s bedroom closed during the day - This will prevent hot air and the sun’s direct heat from entering the room. It might be hard to resist opening windows when it’s hot outside but you will benefit so much more if you do. Try to wait until the evening when temperatures have reduced so it’s cool air, rather than warm, that you are welcoming into the bedroom.

  • Invest in a cooling pillow - It’s been claimed by manufacturers, ‘Chillow’ that its users drift off to sleep by an average 68 per cent faster than those using a normal pillow. Cooling pillows work by absorbing heat from the body and releasing it into the surrounding air. It is intended to be ‘pleasantly cool’ rather than cold.

  • Run your child’s wrists under a cold tap before bed - Or let them take a tepid shower for an instant cooling effect.

  • Eat small meals and often - It’s never a good idea to go to bed on a full stomach, especially when it’s hot. Eating less and often means your child will feel full enough to sleep but not uncomfortably so.

  • Use cool cotton sheets instead of a duvet - Cotton is crisp, won’t cling to the body and therefore allows plenty of ventilation for a comfortable night’s sleep. For an extra cool boost pop the sheets in the fridge for around an hour before bedtime.

  • Use an electric fan at bedtime - Fans are great in theory but on a really hot day all they do is blow more hot air around a room. However, if you place a bowl of ice in front of a fan in your child’s bedroom, they’ll get a truly refreshing breeze to relax them into sleep.

  • Invest in solar window film in preparation for the next heatwave! - This can be fitted to any existing glazing as a retrofit product. It has the effect of reducing heat gain in the home by 86% in summer, while reducing heat loss by around 40% during those colder months too.

  • Make sure your little one has a comfortable children’s bed to sleep in - A sturdy, spacious and stunning bed could make all the difference...
