Mark the end of another school year with a good old summer clear out!

The summer holidays present the perfect opportunity to catch up with yourself and sort out the probable chaos of your child’s room. There is certainly some satisfaction to be had from getting organised, ship shape and ready for the onset of the autumn term, especially when your mantra is ‘out with the old and in with...nothing whatsoever’!

You see, the great thing about a summer clear out, as opposed to a pre-Christmas one, is that you know the space you create won't be filled with more ‘stuff’ that you’ll struggle to find a home for in a few weeks time.

So where should you start?

Involve the children. Sorting through piles of games and toys with the children might sound ambitious. Afterall, who hasn't ever tried to sneak bags full of paraphernalia out of the house to the charity shop, only to be rumbled at the door? But, involving the children can be very useful too. All the things you have been hanging onto for fear of a mutiny were they to disappear, will very likely get tossed aside like an old sock proving that in actual fact, it’s you who is trying to hold onto the past, not your ever-growing, ever-maturing child…

Reorganise. Perhaps you have been left with more than you intended when you decided upon a clear out...Sorry, that might be my fault for suggesting you involve the children! Never mind, just make sure you have somewhere to stack, store and hold secure the items that didn’t make it to the car boot sale! I would recommend a bedding box, or a foldaway storage bag. They look pretty whilst holding plenty too.

Refresh. Now that you’ve cleared out all the unwanted items and tidied away the rest, you can get to work on reviving the room. Altering the layout is a great way to start. New accessories can also make a huge difference, adding colour, interest and style. Wall art, bean bags, mirrors and rugs….There's no need to change the furniture to change the room...
