Maximising space in your child’s room

Why is it an issue?

A child’s bedroom usually has more clutter, clothes and knick-knacks than any other area of the home. So much so, it can often look like the local car boot sale has taken up residence. It’s so easy to close the door on such chaos and hope that the cleaning fairy will wave her magic wand in your absence. However, seeing as that isn’t likely to happen any time soon, perhaps it might be wise to look at how you can maximise space and storage in your child’s bedroom instead!

How much space do you have?

The size and shape of your available space is key to deciding which pieces of furniture to prioritise. For large rooms this shouldn’t be a problem and you will probably end up with more space and storage than you actually need.

But for smaller and especially odd shaped rooms, you may find yourself in a conundrum. In which case it might be worth looking for companies that offer bespoke children’s furniture, such as Little Lucy Willow. All our exclusive ranges are designed and manufactured in house enabling us to tweak measurements should our standard products not be suitable. So don’t despair, your child’s dream bedroom CAN become a reality!

Space saving beds

It goes without saying that you will want a comfortable, spacious and sturdy bed for your child so make sure those boxes are ticked on any purchase you make. There are so many different bed designs on the market today that will open up your storage options and offer space saving benefits too.

The ‘go-to’ beds within this category are undoubtedly the cabin bed and high sleeper, both of which are loved by children thanks to their additional height and ‘den-like’ feel.

The cabin bed

A relatively small, compact design that packs a really big punch. Many cabin beds have ample storage for clothes, toys and books, all within the footprint of a single bed. The Little Lucy Willow cabin bed also features a pull-out desk which can be neatly stored away when the homework is done.

The high sleeper

With room for a full wardrobe, chest of drawers and maybe a desk beneath an elevated bed, high sleepers are the ultimate space savers. They also allow for a little space to play, giving an extra dimension to your child’s bedroom.

The truckle

The truckle might not have all the credentials of the aforementioned storage kings, but there are many advantages to this design and its standard single bed, not least being able to say goodnight without having to scale ladders and safety barriers first!

The truckle is great way to maximise space in shared rooms as well as being ideal for sleepovers.

A comfortable and spacious spare bed that can be hidden away until required.

Additionally, the truckle needn’t be used as a bed. Without the mattress it can serve as a very useful storage drawer instead with ample room for your child’s belongings.

Space saving furniture

  • When you can’t spread out, go up! Instead of a standard a wardrobe, choose one with additional drawers at the base and as much internal storage as possible.
  • Opt for a tallboy instead of a chest of drawers – remember always fix taller furniture to the wall in line with safety instructions.
  • If you have room for a bedside cabinet, make sure its internal space is maximised with a shelf and drawers if possible.
  • Fix a line of hooks to the wall if space allows, for all those bags, coats, scarves and hoodies.
  • A floating shelf can be a handy storage space – making sure items are not too large or heavy in a child’s room of course.
