Moving Your Child From A Small Bed To A Double Bed - Your Questions Answered

Moving Your Child From A Small Bed To A Double Bed - Your Questions Answered

Moving your child from a small bed to a double bed can be an arduous task. There are so many choices and decisions to make, is it even worth it? It is an important investment and therefore making sure you get it right is vital. There are many questions to tackle but here at Little Lucy Willow we want to make sure you are clued up so you can make an informed decision when browsing our fabulous range of children’s beds.

At What Age Can A Child Sleep In A Double Bed?

There is no definite answer to the exact age that you should move your child from a smaller bed to a double bed. It can often vary greatly from child to child and depends on your current circumstances. However, the general consensus is that if you have a child who is around 7 or 8, to at least start considering the upgrade, as it will save you considerable amounts of time and effort later on.

This being said, there is not really too young of an age. Some parents choose to let their children sleep in double beds from the age of three but there is the danger that they will get used to the space and struggle to adapt back into a smaller bed if the situation ever arises. Despite this, an early investment in a double bed for your child will mean you also have a place for guests to stay if you don’t have a dedicated guest room and under-bed storage set-ups like the ones we have available on our website can provide a perfect place to store any clutter.

Is A Double Bed Best For My Child?

Like when debating the best age for a child to sleep in a double bed, deciding whether or not it is the best option is another tricky matter. The main advantage of having a double bed for your child is space. If you frequently find yourself spending time with your children in their rooms, whether playing with them, cuddling them or even reading them a bedtime story, a double bed is a great investment.

Furthermore, as your child gets older, their need for more space will grow with them. Not only will they take up more space when sleeping but need room to sprawl out with devices and books for dreaded time spent doing homework.

Is A Double Bed Safe For My Child?

When buying something new for your children, whether a toy, piece of clothing or even a bed, you will always be concerned as to whether it is safe for them. The internet is full of horror stories of exploding toys, accidentally allergenic foods and other nasty surprises so it is no wonder that you want to make sure something as important as a new bed is safe for your child.

Well, if anything double beds are safer for children than single beds, especially for younger ones. More space means that they are less likely to fall off during the night, as well as giving them more room to sprawl out if they have any aches.

How Can I Help My Child Adjust To Their New Double Bed?

Once you have found the perfect double bed for your child, the next task at hand is to help them adjust to their new double bed. Whether they have come directly from a cot or from a single bed first, some children may struggle to adjust. However, do not fret, as there are some sure-fire ways to help their transition that little bit easier.

Sometimes, you might choose to let your child bring something over from their old bed. If they were in a cot, a blanket may help put them at ease. Similarly, if they slept in a single bed prior to their new double bed you can use the same pillows or even transfer over the single duvet, as it is not a necessity to use a double duvet. In fact, some younger children may find a double duvet overwhelming and can cause overheating.

Other ways to help them adjust to their new double bed is through more downtime in bed. You can do this by reading them another bedtime story or two, having time cuddling them before bed and even adjusting the room itself to make it more comfortable.
