Small Bedroom? No Problem

Small Bedroom? No Problem

Children are often left with the smaller, oddly-shaped rooms of a house due to space issues. Decorating these small bedrooms for your children can be quite challenging. We all want our children to have bright and beautiful spaces to play, rest, and do their homework in so hopefully, with the seven tips and tricks discussed below, you will be able to turn your child’s bedroom into a beautiful little sanctuary for them.

With just a touch of inspiration and effort, you can easily and inexpensively to turn your child’s bedroom into a fun, playful, and organised space. Whether you are looking to transform a girls’ bedroom or a boys’ bedroom, the best place to start is with the essentials: beds and storage. Once these two main features of the bedroom are addressed it is easy to add in charming and playful design features and that essential bit of extra aesthetic effort and decoration that won’t overwhelm the small space.

  1. Maximise Floor Space With a Risen Bed

Every bit of floor space is precious in a child’s bedroom. The floor is where all the hours of fun and creativity happen. A bed is normally the largest piece of furniture in a child’s bedroom so you want to think carefully about which bed to buy your child. In a small bedroom, it is best to keep the footprint of the bed as small as possible by using a high rise bed - such as a cabin bed. This is a great way to maximise on all the floor space available to you and allows the space underneath the bed to be used for storage and other practical solutions. All this extra storage space will also help your child keep their room neat and more organised.

  1. Consider a Built-In Storage

In a small room, built-in storage can be a real lifesaver. It can help make the room feel more spacious for your child, while still allowing enough space to house all their belongings. A great idea is to include a slimline desk when adding any built-in storage. Remember to also include a lot of storage around your child’s desk. This will help them to keep their desk clear so that it is useable at all times.

  1. Add a Peg Rail

Utilizing wall space is a great way to free up floor space. The space over the bed is often left unused or only used for art and/or stickers. If your child has a small room, a really practical and helpful addition is a peg rail. Installing a peg rail can add extra storage for very practical things, such as dressing gowns and PE bags. There are also many aesthetic peg rails available so it can also double as a design feature in your child’s bedroom.

  1. Match Floorboards and Walls

Embracing a light colour scheme that extends from the walls to the floors is a great way to make a room appear larger. Bear this in mind when designing your child’s bedroom. Stick to neutrals for base colours and add pops of fun and bright colours through additional textiles and accessories.

  1. Replace Book Shelves with Floating Shelves

Shelving is a great way to easily store and display objects in a child’s bedroom. But if they have a small room there might not be enough space for a large bookshelf. A solution to this could be installing some floating shelves instead. They have a more minimal presence and can be adjusted to better suit the available space. They are also a great way to create a feature wall in a small space that is both functional and stylish.

  1. Limit Colours and Patterns

Small rooms are easily overwhelmed by clutter and busy colours and patterns. Keep any additional colour to a few key accessories, such as table lamps or wall art for a more controlled scheme. It is important to remember that objects and toys made for children are often colourful and/or patterned, so opting for neutrals wherever possible is advised for a small space and will give a more balanced aesthetic.

  1. Embrace Multi-Use Furniture

Cramming too many objects into a small area is guaranteed to make the space feel disorganised and chaotic. One way to overcome this is by investing in various multi-use objects and furniture. This should decrease the number of objects a room would need. Also, always measure carefully when ordering furniture to find a piece that will match your measurements and requirements as best as possible.
