Adapting Your Child's Bedroom to Suit Their Changing Needs as They Get Older

Adapting Your Child's Bedroom to Suit Their Changing Needs as They Get Older

Planning is the most important aspect of decorating your child’s bedroom. Children go through many stages in their development, and it happens at a scarily fast pace. As your child gets older, they will inevitably outgrow their bedroom at various points. This will require you to make changes to their space — but that doesn’t mean you have to invest in a whole new bedroom each time. By choosing versatile decor and furniture, you can easily adapt their bedroom to their changing needs and tastes as they age. This article will give some advice for transitioning your child’s bedroom throughout the different stages of his or her life.

From Baby to Toddler

Your child’s room should change according to their changing needs. One of the biggest transitions is from baby to toddler. With this comes the change from a crib to their first bed. When your child is a toddler they will also start to have a lot more stuff. This means adding more storage. Think carefully about your storage solutions as they will be an ongoing need as your child grows. A top tip is to choose wardrobes with flexible hanging and shelf solutions. Babies and toddlers don’t need full length hanging space but do require lots of shelving. This will change as they get older though so you will want to be able to adapt the space as fits.

From Toddler to School Age

At this stage, children start to notice and develop their own opinions regarding bedroom décor and styling. When decorating a nursery it is done so based purely on your own decorating sensibilities but as your child gets older you will need to consider their taste and interests. At this stage, being organised becomes more important and it is helpful to encourage it as much as possible through practical and smart storage solutions throughout their bedroom. With your children owning more of their own things, it is important to have as many storage options as possible to encourage them to keep their room tidy and organised. Hooks and pegs are very useful additions to a child’s bedroom as they are great at easily storing away things like bags, clothes, coats, hats, and more.

From Child to Teenager

As your child transitions into a teenager, their taste and interest will more than likely change along with them. This is a great time to get your child involved in the design process and create a space that will serve them well and be a sanctuary for them. As your child gets older and there is an increased focus on schoolwork, a desk or table set up is a must. Your child’s social life will also likely increase, which means a lot more guests and sleepovers. A convenient and practical solution to this is investing in bunk beds or a truckle bed.

When creating a space for your little one, you want it to be a place they want to spend time in and also be a highly practical space. Their bedroom needs to be a happy place for playing, working, and sleeping. It also needs to be able to adapt as your child grows. An easy way to achieve this is by investing in a few key pieces, and then make updates with fun textiles, decor, and paint.

Furniture

The large key pieces of furniture in your child’s bedroom can be a major investment. That is why it is best to start with well-made and timeless pieces that will last throughout your little one’s childhood. Choose high-quality pieces that you will both be happy with for years to come!

Decor

Once you have a solid foundation, you can start to add in the fun stuff. These playful details are what your child will most likely love the most. Choose features and decor that can easily be installed and later removed so that when your child has outgrown the look, the entire space won’t need a redesign. As your child’s tastes mature, you can easily swap out the youthful pieces with more grown-up updates.

Textiles

When it comes to linen, use crisp, quality basics and then add fun with patterned duvets, throws, and/or cushions. This way, when your child does decide to move on to a style that is a little more adult, the foundation will already be in place and only a few simple swaps will be needed.

As your child grows, their bedroom will need to grow with them. This can feel overwhelming, but we hope this article will help you to plan and create a well-considered bedroom design that can easily be transformed.
