How to keep your child’s bedroom tidy after Christmas

First of all, brace yourself. Attempting to keep your child’s bedroom tidy is a bit like sticking to all those unrealistic new year’s resolutions you’ve made.

It is no easy feat and should be approached with reasonable expectations, should you not wish to feel like a failure! As the most cluttered, chaotic and well used space in the home, it isn’t going to look like a showroom any time soon, no matter how many times you whizz round with the hoover. With this in mind, set the bar low.

Mess isn’t all bad however. Those new Christmas goodies might amount to little more than a tip in your eyes but they also mean there’s plenty to occupy your child’s time too. Swings and roundabouts?

Having said that, those heady few weeks post-holidays have now passed and surely it’s time to restore some order before the clutter turns to chaos?

Don’t go it alone!

Make it a joint venture instead. Taking the task and running with it might seem like the easiest – and quickest - thing to do, but letting your child be a part of proceedings is the way to go. Not only will they know where to find their ‘stuff’, they may also discover older toys and games that will keep them from under your feet for a few hours more! It’s a win win. Tweak the house rules according to your child’s age and get ‘tidy my room’ up there on the list of chores.

Once the first big stint is complete and your child’s bedroom is looking something like a bedroom again, the regular top-up-tidy should be quick and easy. In theory…

Don’t go overboard!

As those new toys are still classed as a novelty, perhaps they shouldn’t be banished to the back of the wardrobe just yet.

It’s important not to hide all your child’s belongings away in cupboards and drawers in an attempt to create a catalogue image. Remember, it’s their bedroom, not yours and as much as you want it to be tidy, it’s their patch first and foremost.

Make sure favourite belongings are easily accessible and can be put away without having to climb or reach too far.

Go lightly and attempt to make time every few days to help your child keep on top of things.

Invest in some handy storage solutions

Soft storage is great for items such as Lego, tiny dolls clothes and general paraphernalia that can swiftly be scooped up at the end of each day.

Canvas bags and organisers are extremely handy for this purpose and make tidying up less of a chore.

Bag in hand, your child can collect their things quickly and easily without too much reason to moan about it!

Invest in suitable children’s furniture

Having the right children’s bedroom furniture is key to making sure their room will stay tidy. Ample drawers, hanging space and shelves are all essential given the variety and volume of a child’s belongings.

If you have room, consider a combination wardrobe or chest of drawers, a bedside table with a cupboard and shelf, or a bedding box perhaps.

For smaller rooms, maximise your available space with a cabin bed. This thoughtfully designed children’s bed has plenty of in-built storage for clothes, shoes, books and those all-important toys.

It also features a pull-out desk, so you can store your furniture away for the night too!

Simply put, you can never have enough storage in a child’s bedroom. The more you have, the easier it will be to keep it spick and span. Great storage means no more cramming clothes into a bursting wardrobe or creaking drawers and no more books and games piled high on the floor, ready to topple at any given moment.
