Five tips to create a timeless kid's bedroom

Furnishing a child’s bedroom can be fun and exciting, with so many colours, themes and fabrics to choose from. But unless you have endless pots of money - and time - to continually update the décor and furniture, you may want to think carefully before embarking on a huge ‘princess’ project.

As boring as it may sound to your child, it makes financial sense to try and create a room that won’t date too quickly. This doesn’t make your task any easier however. It requires extremely careful planning and coordination to bring all elements of your vision together in an effective and interesting way. After all, without a particular ‘off the shelf’ theme to adhere to, the design is all down to you. No pressure…

So where do you start? Follow our five tips to create a truly timeless child’s bedroom!

Neutral walls

If your child’s bedroom is going to go the distance, then you will to have to put your foot down at any suggestion of cartoon murals or wallpaper…It’s a tough call but a sensible one in the long run. Painting over a dazzling Elsa or a luminous Belle in several years’ time won’t be an easy feat either so save yourself the trouble!

Staying neutral means you create a suitable backdrop for framed posters, artwork, photographs or wall hangings without affecting the décor. These will all add colour and interest, even more so in contrast with muted tones.

Keep any woodwork similarly neutral. White never fails.

Painted furniture

Painted children’s furniture is available in many colours. Against neutral walls and floors, any shade will work. However, if you are looking to invest in furniture that will last many years, it makes sense to choose something low-key. White is ideal as it will probably never date, continuing to look fresh against whatever bedding or fabrics come and go.

Upcycle old pieces

Try upcycling one or two pieces of standalone furniture to customise your child’s bedroom. A whole room set filled with matching children's furniture has more chance of dating than if carefully considered individual pieces are included in the design.

You may have vintage furniture, such as a chair or chest of drawers, that you don’t quite know what to do with. One or the other might work perfectly in your child’s room, painted or re-covered to suit. Not only will this make for an interesting focal piece it will add a personal touch too.

Stick to clean lines

For any furniture you do need to buy, stick to clean lines and unfussy design. Anything overly ornate or ‘current’ will not weather changing trends easily. Castle or car shaped beds are a definite no!

In addition, look out for children’s furniture which allows door and drawer handles to be changed. This will give you a little more room for manoeuvre as the years go by.

Avoid themes

It’s easy to get carried away with princesses, monsters or any number of Disney characters.

Unfortunately, if you are actively trying to avoid themed bedroom décor you’ll have a tough job on your hands in this age of mass merchandising. Go in any supermarket and you’ll find everything from duvet covers and throws to lamp shades and bean bags all adorned with the latest characters.

Due to the rate of film releases, amount of television channels available and computer games on the market, the options are overwhelming too.

The chances are that your child will obsess over certain films and heroes for a short while before moving onto the next big thing – leaving a monstrous trail of merchandise in their wake!

Resist if you can. Or rather, if you dare!
